Costing Less than a new hatchback – and doing everything better.

Among the many luxury saloons on the market, the A8 quietly asserts itself as the choice for those who value discretion, engineering, and deep comfort over flash. And within that understated world, this particular example stands out – not for loud colours or aggressive trim, but for its astonishing level of specification. We’ve not come across another like it.

Where this car truly sets itself apart, though, is in its options list, which totalled just shy of £40,000 new. Featured is nearly every desirable package Audi offered at the time, totalling the original list price to £112,815.

Today, at around 22% of its original value, it represents one of the most compelling value propositions in modern luxury motoring. We can say with confidence that there is currently no other A8 on the market offering this depth of specification at anything close to this money.

Finished in Mythos Black Metallic over Sard Brown Valcona leather, the colour combination is quietly superb. The rich brown hide, paired with natural Eucalyptus wood inlays and an optional Alcantara headlining, lifts the cabin far beyond what most people expect from an A8. It feels warm, architectural and properly expensive — a space designed to be lived in, not merely driven. Externally, subtle chrome detailing, also featured on the 20-spoke wheels add just enough visual intent without disturbing the car’s inherent restraint.

Spend time around luxury cars in major cities and you start to notice a pattern. S-Classes and 7 Series are often fleet cars, hotel shuttles or ride-hailing workhorses. A8s, on the other hand, tend to belong to embassies, private individuals and, historically, even the British Royal Household.

Power comes from Audi’s superb 3.0-litre V6 TDI, producing 282 bhp and delivering 0–62 mph in just 5.9 seconds — brisk by any measure, especially for a long-wheelbase luxury saloon. Mated to an 8-speed Tiptronic gearbox and quattro all-wheel drive, it’s unflappable in all conditions. The air suspension smooths out broken surfaces effortlessly, yet the car still feels controlled and composed when pressing on. Economy in the high 40s mpg is entirely achievable, and with a full tank showing close to 800 miles of range, it’s a long-distance machine in the truest sense. £110 of premium diesel and you’re set.

The second and most current keeper acquired the car in January 2019 from Whetstone Audi, with just 8,000 miles covered. It’s since been used exactly as it should be: long journeys, premium fuel only, and maintenance carried out on time and documented via Audi’s digital service history. Since arriving with us, it’s been fully inspected by our Audi factory-trained technician and comprehensively future-proofed – including gearbox oil change, additional lubrication service, upgraded air filters, new auxiliary belt, intercooler, upper and lower suspension arms, and a full four-wheel alignment. Nothing has been deferred or ignored.

Some will glance at the mileage and see a number approaching six figures. We see something far more important: how the car has been used, maintained and how it presents today. Diesels of this calibre thrive on long-distance use, and we would be far more cautious of a low-mileage example that’s spent its life doing short trips.

Despite its age, it still feels remarkably current. Sit inside and the layout wouldn’t feel out of place in a brand-new RS6. From the outside, only subtle bumper revisions separate it from today’s A8. And yet here it is, costing a fraction of what it once did.

With newer luxury alternatives increasingly shifting towards EV platforms – with questionable long-term durability and finite battery lifespans – there’s something deeply reassuring about a car like this. Engineered to last, beautifully built, and backed by one of the most proven drivetrains Audi has ever produced.

In many ways, it feels like one of the last truly new-ish cars that will still make sense – and still be rewarding – long into the future.
